Rome has stood at the center of Western political and artistic imagination for over two millennia. This course will be the history of the visual culture in of one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. The urban landscape of Rome, comprising spaces, structures, monuments, and embellishments will be studied as they have been preserved, destroyed, and transformed over time, from the 8th century B.C. through the Twentieth Century. Works of art will be explored in the contexts for which they were created, but also to confront the ways in which monuments survive in history to shape and color later societies.
